If you want to be part of the SWAT team, there is a series of exams that you must pass to make this a reality. The first thing that you must do in order to be a SWAT team participant is to get hired as a police officer. I know that sounds elementary, but some people actually think that they can simply walk off the street and apply to be a SWAT team officer. Sorry folks, but it’s not that simple. In fact, you must apply and get hired as a police officer first before you can go into a specialized unit like the S.W.A.T team.

Here’s some general requirements that’s needed to become part of the S.W.A.T team:

You must apply and get hired as a police officer

You must have been on the department for at least one year

You must have went through your rookie year without any negative write-ups

You must possess a good work ethic

You must pass the polygraph test

You must pass the oral board interview

You must pass the psychological evaluation

You must be in good physical condition

That’s about it for all the requirements needed to become a SWAT team member. The most important things on that list is you must apply and get hired as a policemen. To get hired as quickly as possible, and separate yourself from the competition, you must get a top score on the oral board interview. You see the hiring panel put more emphasis on how well you do on your oral exam, than anything else.

So in conclusion, if you want to become a police officer as quickly as possible, and later become a SWAT team officer then the only thing you need to worry about RIGHT NOW is getting hired.

The majority of the occasions when individuals hear about working in the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) they immediately think of secret agents, covert operations, and James Bond. But the CIA is not only concerned with covert operations and secret agents are not the only workers, in actuality secret agents fall under the Clandestine Service division of the CIA and are solely a small percentage of the CIAs overall staff; most of the staff have ordinary, boring jobs found in any other business place but the selection process for the CIA is very rigorous, so even if one has the education and knowledge necessary for working in the CIA, there is however, no guarantee that he/she are going to be employed.

First and foremost, only U.S. citizens can apply to the CIA, so if an individual does not possess U.S. citizenship he/she will either have to look for employment in a different place or work on acquiring his/her citizenship. Secondly, all prospective workers needs to go through security checks and a exceptionally systematic background check; criminal activities, unethical behavior, past or present drug abuse, bad credit, gambling and several additional factors might stop one being employed, the records of ones parents and associates can also have an effect on his/her chances so be wary of the acquaintances you have if you desire employment in the CIA.

Nearly all career in the CIA calls for at least a bachelors degree and a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher thus candidates will be required to keep up good grades; fluency in one or additional foreign languages will really raise ones odds of being given a job, chiefly in the Clandestine Service, so work on your foreign language proficiency.

The various sections in the CIA are Analysis, Clandestine Services, Engineering, Information Technology, Geography, Legal Services, Medical Services, Support Services, Science, Technology and Weapons, Security, Logistics Services and quite a few besides. Inside every section are several sub-sections, for example, a person seeking security employment in the CIA may apply as a Security Administrator, Security Professional, Police Officer, Protective Agent, Polygraph Examiner or Technical Security Officer.

When applying to the CIA, apply for particular positions; you can apply for as much as 4 openings on a lone application form instead of submitting more than one applications as such make sure you meet the minimum requirements for every job you apply for. If you are curious, visit the CIA website for employment openings that you may be fit for.

Get a physical and psychological check performed and run a background check on yourself so you have some idea of what the CIA will see when they run their check, and you will know if it even makes sense to apply or not; you will moreover have to do a polygraph test before you may be given a job.

When an individual is accepted into the CIA, he/she will most often have a trial teaching phase and participate in work teaching particularly for positions in the Clandestine Service; only after completing all the tests abovementioned and the probationary phase will a person be an authorized worker of the CIA.

The very first thing that you need to do before even thinking about Swat team training requirements is to get involved in the law enforcement field in some form or fashion. They aren’t gonna let some normal guy walk in right off the street and join a group of elite officers. In most situations the officers chosen are ones that started out on patrol and built up a good reputation. Another route is to go through the military and get the special training there to pursue this career as a civilian and meet the Swat team training requirements.

The next step that you need to take in order to prepare yourself for Swat team training requirements is to be in top physical shape. After all they are more likely to only want the guys that are physically able to hold up to the demands that the job calls for out in the field. There are programs that a person can join to help get in better shape as a group. It’s always easier to train and get into better shape with a partner so keep that in mind when thinking about the physical Swat team training requirements.

The mental state of the individual looking to get ready to pass Swat team training requirements is just as important as the others already mentioned in this article. If they don’t think that you will be able to handle the mental pressures and stress of the job then they will pass on offering you a position. While it can vary with the various departments in most cases they will give both a written and verbal evaluation to the applicant.

Once all the physical and mental aspects of the job are met then one has to think about the more detailed Swat team training requirements. There is a reason these guys are a special group and that is because they are trained to handle so many different scenarios. You see there are combat, counter-terrorism, sniper, hostage, explosives, chemicals and various other scenarios that one could encounter out in the field.

Those are my tips on how to meet Swat team training requirements and as mentioned above focus on the main principles first before even thinking about the more complex parts. I would say that the law enforcement and military background aspects are the most important part followed by the physical fitness of the person thinking about the position.

A police officer is on patrol when he gets a call about a domestic dispute. When he arrives at the scene, he finds that an armed man has taken his girlfriend hostage and barricaded himself inside his apartment. The officer calls for backup, but when the other officers arrive, they realize that their standard guns won’t shoot through the barricades. They don’t have surveillance equipment to see inside the apartment, which would give them crucial information about the assailant and the hostage. If the assailant starts shooting at them, they don’t have body armor to protect them from his bullets. They could use gas to incapacitate him, but they don’t have access to it. They haven’t been trained to storm the apartment and incapacitate the attacker with minimal risk of injury to the hostage, the officers and the assailant.

Luckily, most police forces have a special unit with the equipment and training needed to resolve exactly this kind of situation: the SWAT team. A SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) team is an elite unit within a police force, used for exceptional situations that require increased firepower or specialized tactics. The officers in a SWAT unit have undergone special training and have access to an arsenal of weaponry, armor and surveillance devices beyond standard-issue police gear. Much of this gear comes in the form of military surplus.

Here are a few situations that typically require a SWAT team call-out:

* A high-risk warrant – If the police are going to conduct an arrest at a home, and they know the person is likely to be armed, they will call in the SWAT team to perform the arrest.
* A hostage situation – SWAT team snipers are trained to take out an attacker who is holding a hostage in the event that negotiations break down.
* A barricade situation – When criminals barricade themselves inside a building, possibly with weapons that are fired out at the police or civilians, a SWAT team can launch a powerful assault to end the stand-off.
* A high-risk person – If someone needs to be transported, and there is a high chance of an assassination attempt on his life, SWAT team armored vehicles can serve as protection.
* An armed terrorist attack.
* A riot.

The Los Angeles Police Department is generally credited with developing the concept of SWAT in the 1960s. Political and social turmoil in the United States during that decade led police to decide that they were unequipped to deal with certain violent situations. The Watts Riots in 1965 and the 1966 sniper attack at the University of Texas in Austin reinforced the fact that they needed special equipment and procedures. Daryl Gates, a high-ranking LAPD officer who eventually became police chief, is often mistakenly credited with coming up with the idea of adopting military weapons and tactics for police units. However, Gates did use his position within the force to promote the idea of a SWAT team.

Initially, the SWAT unit was viewed with great skepticism by police officials, politicians and even other officers. The original acronym, “Special Weapons Attack Team,” was viewed as too antagonistic, so Gates changed it to “Special Weapons and Tactics.” Two incidents cemented the SWAT team’s place within the modern police force: a barricade stand-off with members of the radical militant Black Panther Party in 1969, and a similar situation with the Symbionese Liberation Army in 1974. The next year, a network television series called “S.W.A.T.” further embedded the idea of a SWAT team into American consciousness. Police units using paramilitary tactics quickly spread across the country, first through major cities with violent gangs, then filtering down to smaller cities.

Today, about 90 percent of all police forces in U.S. cities with a population of 50,000 or more have some kind of SWAT unit, while 70 percent of smaller municipalities have them. That equates to roughly 1,200 SWAT teams in the United States

The desire to become a SWAT team mamber must be matched by persistence and dedication to a team concept. The following information is presented as an overview of some of the criteria and methods teams use to select new operators. Criteria and selection methods differ from team to team, and weather the agency has a full-time or part-time SWAT unit.

Personal Qualities

Tactical operations are specialized work and call for specialized individuals. Tactical team members must exhibit many good qualities and be mentally and physically competent. Only serious individuals need to be associated with tactical operations. The purpose of being a team member is not to further a political career or play dress-up and wear cool looking uniforms. In fact, this is the last reason for you to want to be on a tactical team. If this is what you want, there is no need for you to apply. While there are no absolute guidelines for selecting personnel for tactical operations, strength and fitness is only a part of what makes up a good SWAT operator.

Intelligence – It doesn’t take very much thought to give someone a weapon and send them through a door. For tactical operators, intelligence is an absolute must. Good skills in reasoning and being able to “think on your feet” are highly sought after operator traits. Tactical operations by their very nature are dynamic and on the spot planning and adaptability are essential. Selection of individuals with above average intelligence and from diverse educational backgrounds greatly enhances the versatility of the team.

Physical Fitness – Operators should be in shape! This does not mean that everyone should be able to press 500 pounds of iron and tear through a steel door barehanded, but that they have good strength characteristics. While upper body strength is part of this, stamina is an equally (if not more important) part of physical fitness. Individuals should be in good shape with as few joint problems as possible. Also, operators should be non-smokers. The last thing a team needs is someone who needs to take a smoke break or who smells like an ashtray. Physically, an operator should be able to run, hike, climb, and swim as a normal part of daily PT.

Motivation – Self-motivation is a key part of an operator’s success. Persons who enjoy a challenge and thrive on success make good SWAT operators. This may sound counterproductive by getting a bunch of egomaniacs on a team, but motivation and competition are good team player qualities. Motivated individuals are generally reliable individuals.

Stability – An even temperament is essential for an operator. Tactical teams do not need someone who cannot keep their cool under stress.

Team Spirit – This is probably the most essential skill an operator can have. Remember, there is no “I” in “team”. Tactical units cannot afford the luxury of someone who wants to pack it in for the day when things start going badly. You can not say “I quit” in the middle of any operation and expect to be successful.

SWAT teams are normally considered a specialized assignment, and for that reason it is a tested position. Teams will test new candidates on their physical fitness, mental stability, and suitability to the team structure and function. Some teams may require a written commitment to this assignment due to the ever changing work schedules, perpetual on-call work status, and mandatory response time and attendance (not to mention the time and money spent in the basic training of a new recruit).

The following is a basic guideline of soem of the testing procedures and requirements considered by SWAT teams:

Written Exam – may consist of tactical material, policies and procedures, and other skills necessary.

Fitness Test – A variety of tests are used. Depending on the physical location, possible operations an operamator may be required to conduct, and any other physical fitness requirements which are normally tested regularly. The following is just one example of a basic SWAT enterance PT test. These tests are used as a guide to test a candidates fitness level and to reveal determination and desire to make the team. – Maximum Bench Press (one rep)
- Maximum Leg Press (one rep)
- Maximum Pushups (1 min time limit…all the way down using proper form)
- Maximum Situps (1 min time limit)
- 1.5 Mile Timed Run
- 300 Yard Sprint
- 150 lb. “Dummy Drag”

This is a very minimal physical test. Other departments may require swimming, running, and more advanced PT testing. Each department has it’s own standards for team selection. SWAT operators are expected to be able to regularly pass fitness tests to remain operational. Additionally, more advanced SWAT schools often have stringent fitness requirements (LE diving for example requires a swimming/water survival test).

Firearms Test – SWAT teams require their members to utilize firearms of various types with more proficiency and safety than other officers. For this reason the firearms test given to candidates will normally be more comprehensive than anything encountered in either the regular police academy or in regular annual qualifications and training. The average firearms test may consist of:- Target Acquisition Drills
- Rapid Fire Sequences

Review Board – Candidates may be required to pass an interview board, wich is usually conducted to test and individuals ability to think on their feet and gain insight into their suitability for assignment. A great amount of information may be gained from a candidate including personality type, the amount of preparation they put into testing, their ability to work as part of a team, and their level of commitment. Some interviews may also require the the candidate make a presentation on a SWAT-related topic. This is just another tool used by SWAT teams to test candidates and is not conclusive as a testing procedure, but is used in conjunction with other methods (as those previously mentioned).

Psychological Evaluation – SWAT team candidates may be required to undergo psychological testing as part of the selection criteria or as a post-selection process. Some teams use this test as a post selection limiting the evaluation to any candidates they are interested in. A few of the things that may be relevent are the candidates ability to work with a team, level of self confidence and ability to manage stress. Some test procedures may be more strenuous and require higher scores to be picked for team assignment.

Other Selection Factors – Teams may have pre-testing requirements or post-selection guidelines that a candidate may have to agree to. Failure to comply may lead to reassignment. Some of these guidelines may include but are not limited to no smoking or tobacco use of any kind, no alcohol use, required response time to callout, and minimum service requirements.
